Ujjain, July 2: A shocking incident in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, has sparked outrage. In the village of Harnayakheda, a woman and her second husband faced public humiliation.
The woman, who left her first husband three years ago to marry another man, returned to the village with her husband to resolve a land dispute. Upon their arrival, her former in-laws and several villagers reacted violently, leading to a disgraceful event that went viral on social media.
According to senior police officials, the mob tore the woman’s clothes, cut her hair, and forced her to wear a garland made of shoes while parading her through the village. During this attack, her husband was also brutally assaulted. A video of the incident surfaced online on Thursday, revealing the brutality and drawing widespread condemnation.
Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma confirmed that the accused are from the woman’s former in-laws. A case has been registered against 11 individuals, including three women. Six of them have been arrested, while five others remain at large. Authorities assured that the remaining suspects would be apprehended soon.
The officer in charge of the Jharada police station reported that the incident occurred around noon on Tuesday, approximately 20 kilometers from the station headquarters. Upon receiving news of the attack, police arrived at the scene, causing panic among the villagers. They arrested Sumer Singh, Badri Lal, Kacharu, and three others, who were later presented in court and sent to jail.
With tensions high in the village, security has been increased to prevent further unrest. The investigation revealed that the woman had previously married a local youth but left him three years ago to live with another man from the same village. The couple later married and settled in Indore. Upon their return to Harnayakheda regarding the land issue, the woman’s former father-in-law allegedly conspired with villagers to attack them.
Disturbingly, while the couple endured this atrocity, many villagers chose to film the incident instead of intervening. The police have now recorded statements from the victims and are taking strict action against those involved.
