Tragic Incident in Mumbai: Man Dies After Falling into Open Manhole, Four Officials Suspended

Mumbai, July 2: A tragic incident occurred in the Sakina Nagar area of Mumbai, where a 55-year-old man fell into an open manhole and lost his life. The victim has been identified as Aslam Isak Sheikh. In response to the incident, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has suspended four officials.

The accident took place while the BMC’s sewage operations department was working on installing safety grates over the manhole. Initial reports indicate that the contractor failed to implement necessary safety measures, revealing serious negligence.

Witnesses reported that there were no barricades or warning signs around the work area. During this time, Aslam Sheikh was passing by while talking on his mobile phone. It is said that workers on-site attempted to alert him, but he lost his balance and fell directly into the open manhole.

Following the incident, teams from the BMC and Mumbai Fire Brigade quickly initiated a rescue operation, but despite their efforts, they were unable to save him.

Taking the incident seriously, BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide ordered an immediate investigation and suspended four officials, including the Assistant Commissioner of the ‘L’ department. The suspended officials are Assistant Commissioner Dhanaji Herlekar, Assistant Engineer Deepak Chougule, Junior Engineer Abhijit Chougule, and Assistant Engineer of Sewage Operations Uttam Patil.

Additionally, orders have been issued to blacklist the contractor involved. A high-level committee, chaired by the Additional Commissioner (Western Suburbs), has been formed to investigate the matter and is expected to submit its report within seven days.

Mayor Ritu Tawde announced a financial aid of 1 million rupees for the victim’s family.

The BMC has also directed that a 100% safety audit of all manholes in Mumbai be conducted within the next eight days to prevent such incidents in the future.

According to officials, preliminary investigations have revealed that the accident was caused by negligence and disregard for safety standards. A detailed investigation is currently ongoing.
