Severe Heatwave in Tamil Nadu, Rain Relief Expected Next Week

Chennai, June 16: Tamil Nadu is currently experiencing a severe heatwave, but the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) predicts rainfall in several districts next week due to a change in the speed and pattern of western winds.

According to the weather department, rain is likely on Tuesday in nine districts, including the Western Ghats region, Namakkal, and Salem.

Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected in Theni district, while moderate rain and strong winds are anticipated in Namakkal, Salem, Tiruchi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, and Mayiladuthurai.

The weather department has also issued warnings for heavy rainfall in Madurai, Ramanathapuram, and Shivagangai districts over the next two days. Rainfall is expected to continue for at least another week in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

For Chennai, the forecast indicates partly cloudy skies with a chance of light rain in some areas. The maximum temperature is expected to reach around 40 degrees Celsius, making it one of the hottest regions in the state.

After experiencing relatively mild weather in recent weeks, Tamil Nadu has seen a rapid increase in temperatures over the past two days. On Monday, extreme heat was recorded at 12 locations across the state.

The highest temperature in the state was recorded at 40 degrees Celsius at the Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam weather stations. Madurai Airport, Madurai city, and Tiruttani also reached temperatures of 39 degrees Celsius. Other areas experiencing extreme heat include Vellore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Karur, Tiruchi, Puducherry, Namakkal, and Palayamkottai.

Despite the heatwave conditions, several districts experienced rainfall on Monday. Reports of rain came from Tambaram, Ariyalur, and Senji, while heavy rain with strong winds persisted for over an hour in Melmalayanur, Valathi, Thayanur, and Eeyakunnam.

In Chennai’s suburbs, rainfall was recorded in Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram, Selaiyur, Mudichur, and Vandalur. Light rain accompanied by thunder and lightning was also reported in Royapuram, Senthurai, Vanjanpuram, Kudumur, Nallanayakpuram, and Perumandi in Ariyalur district, providing temporary relief from the rising temperatures.

Meteorologists suggest that Tamil Nadu is likely to experience a mix of extreme heat and occasional rainfall in the coming days.
