India-China Border Talks: A Positive Step Ahead, Says Veena Sikri

New Delhi, August 25: Veena Sikri, former High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, has emphasized the significance of National Security Advisor Ajit Doval’s visit to China. She noted that the ongoing 25th round of border discussions between India and China is a positive development, highlighting the importance of Doval’s representation in these talks. Additionally, she shared her insights on the upcoming BRICS summit and India-Canada relations.

Sikri stated, “It is indeed a good sign that discussions are taking place between India and China regarding the border. Especially with our National Security Advisor Ajit Doval representing India in these talks.”

She described the discussions as a crucial series aimed at resolving border issues. The BRICS summit is set to occur in about 15-20 days, making Doval’s discussions with Chinese representatives regarding the summit even more pertinent.

Sikri expressed hope that Chinese President Xi Jinping would attend the BRICS summit. She stressed the importance of senior officials engaging in dialogue prior to the summit to clarify what will transpire and what will be addressed in bilateral meetings. She mentioned that India’s Foreign Minister is currently in Russia for similar discussions, particularly concerning President Putin’s anticipated visit to India.

If President Xi’s visit to India is confirmed, Sikri believes a bilateral meeting will certainly take place, allowing for discussions on significant issues, including the border dispute.

Regarding the audio of Goldy Barar and India-Canada relations, Sikri remarked, “The relationship between the two countries has improved significantly. A few years ago, former PM Justin Trudeau claimed in Parliament that he had credible allegations linking India to the death of Hardeep Nijjar. India responded firmly, asserting that it was not involved in any way.”

She noted that this situation had previously strained bilateral relations, leading to the return of diplomats and impacting trade. However, with Canada’s new PM Mark Carney, many issues have been resolved. Canadian agencies have also confirmed that India bears no responsibility in this matter.
