New Delhi, August 25: India has strongly condemned the attack on United Nations peacekeepers deployed in South Sudan. The Permanent Mission of India to the UN stated that the assault on the Blue Helmets, part of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), on August 24 is reprehensible.
The mission paid tribute to the Ethiopian soldier who lost his life in the attack and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. The Indian Mission emphasized on social media platform X that it is crucial to respect the safety of UN facilities and personnel. All parties must ensure that the lives of peacekeepers operating under the Security Council’s mandate are not endangered.
Additionally, India referenced Security Council Resolution 2589, asserting that accountability must be established for crimes against peacekeepers. The country called for an immediate and impartial investigation into the attack to bring the perpetrators to justice. UNMISS also indicated that the assault on Blue Helmets could be classified as a war crime under international law.
The UN mission condemned the attack on its patrol team in Jonglei State, which was targeted by unidentified armed individuals. It stated that assaults against UN peacekeepers could constitute war crimes under international law, including international humanitarian law.
In a statement regarding the incident, the mission reported that two peacekeepers were killed, while seven others were injured, including three peacekeepers, two members of the South Sudan National Police Service, and two civilian staff.
The mission announced the deployment of a Quick Reaction Force to secure the area and assist in emergency response. UNMISS Chief and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General Anita Kiki Gbeho stated, “Such deadly violence targeting UN mission personnel serving to support peace in South Sudan is unacceptable. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the fallen peacekeepers and wish for the swift recovery of the injured.”
