Kolkata, August 25: A shocking incident of robbery and attempted murder has emerged in the Jorabagan area of Kolkata. Reports indicate that a long-time servant, who had been working in the elderly woman’s home for several years, stole her jewelry and cash before fleeing. When she resisted, he allegedly attempted to kill her. Police are actively searching for the suspect.
According to police officials, the family of the victim filed a complaint on Sunday. The seriously injured woman has been admitted to a private hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment.
The elderly woman resides on the fifth floor of a multi-story building on Maharshi Devendra Road in North Kolkata. Sanjay Ghosh, the accused, had gained her trust over the years while working as her servant.
On Saturday afternoon, the suspect, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, entered the woman’s flat and locked the door. Initially, the woman did not sense any danger. The accused engaged her in casual conversation but soon went to the kitchen and returned with a knife, threatening her with it.
When the woman began to scream for help, the suspect turned up the volume on the TV to muffle her cries. Terrified, she fell silent, allowing him to steal her gold chain and earrings. He then snatched a bunch of keys from her waist and opened a cupboard to take out ₹70,000 in cash.
As the suspect attempted to flee, the woman raised her voice again. In response, he tried to strangle her with his belt. When she fought back, he pressed a pillow over her face in an attempt to kill her. The woman nearly lost consciousness, after which the suspect escaped with the stolen cash and jewelry.
The woman lay in a semi-conscious state for several hours. Eventually, when neighbors grew suspicious, they discovered the flat’s door was locked from the inside. They broke in and rescued her, taking her to the hospital.
Once admitted, the woman provided police with a detailed account of the incident. Following her family’s complaint, a case was registered at the Jorabagan police station, and an investigation was launched.
Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby areas to determine the route the suspect took to escape. A search operation is also underway to apprehend him.
