Search Continues for Three Missing Teenagers in Bihars Gandak River

Patna, May 30: A tragic incident unfolded in Gopalganj district, Bihar, on Friday when three teenage girls were swept away by strong currents while crossing the Gandak River by boat. The incident occurred near Dumariya Ghat under the Mohammadpur police station.

The girls were traveling with their mother and some villagers to the other side of the river for agricultural work. As they were returning, the weather suddenly deteriorated, leading to heavy rainfall and rising river currents.

While attempting to cross the river, the three girls reportedly slipped from the boat and were swept away by the turbulent waters. Panic ensued in the area as bystanders raised alarms, prompting villagers from nearby areas to gather at the riverbank to search for the missing girls.

However, the rescue efforts faced significant challenges due to the strong currents and continuous rainfall. Upon receiving news of the incident, SHO Chandan Kumar arrived at the scene with a police team to initiate an investigation.

Taking the matter seriously, the district administration promptly dispatched teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to the site.

Rescue personnel are conducting an extensive search operation in the river using motorboats and other rescue equipment. Nevertheless, officials have reported that the ongoing rescue efforts are severely hampered by the heavy rainfall and swift currents of the Gandak River.

The families of the missing girls are in shock, and there is a palpable atmosphere of grief and concern throughout the village. A large number of local residents have gathered at the riverbank, anxiously awaiting updates from the rescue teams.

Commenting on the incident, Rajesh Kumar, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Gopalganj, stated that a group of villagers from Tandaspur, located near Dumariya Ghat, was crossing the Gandak River with their livestock. Due to the inclement weather and strong river currents, it is feared that the three girls drowned while attempting to cross. SDRF teams were immediately dispatched to the scene, and the search operation is ongoing.
