New Delhi, June 25: The Emergency imposed in India in 1975 is being observed today as ‘Constitutional Murder Day.’ On this occasion, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh stated that significant efforts were made to undermine the values of the Constitution and democratic traditions during that period.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X,’ Singh remarked, “June 25, 1975, was a dark day in the history of Indian democracy when the Emergency was declared.”
He emphasized that during the Emergency, the arrogance of power led to the violation of citizens’ fundamental rights, suppression of press freedom, and the arbitrary imprisonment of thousands of political and social activists, journalists, and ordinary citizens. Dissenting voices were silenced, and attempts to weaken the Constitution’s values and democratic traditions were rampant.
Singh noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to commemorate this day as ‘Constitutional Murder Day’ serves as a reminder of this dark chapter, ensuring that future generations never forget the assault on democracy. He added that this day also provides an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to democracy, civil liberties, and constitutional values.
In his post, Singh wrote, “It reminds us that the Constitution is our nation’s most sacred text and the bedrock of our democratic republic, which we all have a duty to protect.”
Additionally, on this ‘Constitutional Murder Day,’ Singh paid tribute to all the champions of democracy who fought against the tyranny of the Emergency, endured suffering, and dedicated their lives to restoring democracy. He stated that their courage, sacrifice, and dedication will continue to inspire us.
