BJP Commemorates 51 Years of Emergency with Constitution Murder Day Events Nationwide

New Delhi, June 25: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will observe ‘Constitution Murder Day’ on Thursday, marking 51 years since the Emergency was declared in India. The party plans to hold special events across various states, including Bihar and Haryana, to highlight the impact of the Emergency imposed by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on democratic institutions and civil liberties.

On this occasion, the BJP has organized numerous programs aimed at educating the public about the events and consequences of the Emergency. In Bihar, large-scale events will take place at nearly 90,000 polling booths. Central Health Minister JP Nadda will honor around 450 ‘JP warriors’ and ‘democracy fighters’ at the Gyan Bhawan in Patna, who participated in the anti-Emergency movement.

During a joint press conference at the BJP’s Bihar state office, party vice president and former MLA Haribhushan Thakur Bachol and Pawan Jaiswal accused the government of restricting citizens’ fundamental rights during the Emergency and attempting to weaken democratic institutions to maintain political power.

Jaiswal announced that from June 30 to July 6, worker conferences will be held in all 52 organizational districts of Bihar. Additionally, student conferences will be organized in the state’s five administrative divisions under the joint leadership of the BJP’s youth and women’s wings.

In Haryana, BJP leaders described the Emergency as one of the darkest periods in Indian democracy. At a press conference held at the party headquarters in Panchkula, MLA Ghanshyam Das Arora stated that the Congress party, which speaks of saving the Constitution, should first reflect on its actions during the Emergency.

He alleged that democratic rights were suppressed, institutional autonomy was weakened, and freedom of expression was curtailed during that time. Thousands of democracy fighters, political activists, journalists, and social workers were imprisoned, and strict censorship was imposed on the media.

Arora noted that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the then Bharatiya Jana Sangh led movements across the country to restore democracy in opposition to the Emergency. He emphasized that the purpose of commemorating ‘Constitution Murder Day’ is to honor those who fought for democracy and to educate the younger generation about the history and consequences of the Emergency. A special program will also be held at the Atal Sabhagar in Panchkula at 5 PM on Thursday.
