New Delhi, June 25: The 26th Asian Senior Fencing Championship concluded on Wednesday at the India Habitat Centre. This event marked the first continental-level competition of its kind in the country, running for six days. The championship showcased India’s reputation as a country capable of hosting world-class sporting events.
Held under the theme “One Dream, One Blade, One Pride,” the championship attracted over 400 elite athletes and international representatives from more than 34 countries. This tournament was particularly significant as participating athletes and teams were strategizing for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Japan emerged as the champion, securing 6 gold, 5 silver, and 4 bronze medals. South Korea followed in second place with a total of 10 medals, while Kazakhstan claimed third with 5 medals.
For India, this tournament represented a remarkable administrative success and a significant technical leap. Organized by the Fencing Association of India (FAI), the event provided local athletes with excellent opportunities. Notable performances included India’s Prachi Lohan (Women’s Epee) and Sachin (Men’s Foil) finishing in the top 25, alongside Tokyo Olympian C.A. Bhavani Devi and rising star Taniksha Khatri.
Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju attended as the chief guest. He congratulated all participants and discussed the inspiring growth of fencing infrastructure in the country.
He stated, “Fencing is a highly strategic sport with the potential to win multiple Olympic medals. It offers India fantastic opportunities on a global scale. I am pleased to see its rapid growth among our youth. I reaffirm my commitment to fully support and provide all necessary assistance to promote it further. It is truly inspiring to see participation from over 30 countries and more than 400 fencers. India proudly hosted this magnificent Asian Fencing Championship in New Delhi. Congratulations to all medal winners.”
Representing the global governing body, Anthony J.R. Donald, a member of the Executive Committee of the International Fencing Federation (FIE), praised the organization and hospitality of India.
He remarked, “On behalf of the International Fencing Federation, I sincerely thank the Fencing Federation of India and the people of New Delhi for their warm hospitality and excellent organization. This championship has indeed become memorable. Athletes from across Asia displayed tremendous skill and determination, beautifully reflecting the core values of fencing: respect, fairness, and unity. As fencing progresses towards Los Angeles, I invite fencers from all countries to carry this enthusiasm forward to next year’s championship in Abu Dhabi. The passion for fencing continues to inspire us all.”
Rajiv Mehta, Secretary General of the Fencing Confederation of Asia and the Fencing Association of India, addressed the attendees, saying, “I extend heartfelt thanks to the FIE, FCA, and all 27 participating countries for making this championship such a grand success. We are delighted to have successfully hosted our esteemed guests and athletes here in New Delhi. I also express my gratitude to our chief guest Kiren Rijiju for his unwavering support and commitment to advancing Indian fencing. Together with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, we are grateful to the Sports Authority of India (SAI). Our collective efforts have paved the way for a memorable tournament.”
