Jammu, June 27: Former Director General of Police Shesh Paul Vaid has expressed support for U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio‘s commendation of India’s economic stability and global role. In a recent discussion, Vaid noted that despite ongoing crises in West Asia, India has successfully managed inflation and avoided imposing additional economic burdens on its citizens, attributing this success to the central government’s policies.
Vaid pointed out that relations between India and the U.S. have soured in recent times, particularly during President Donald Trump’s administration. He claimed that the Trump administration targeted India on several fronts, imposing extra tariffs and singling out issues like child labor, which should apply uniformly to all nations.
He also highlighted concerns in India regarding the U.S. policy of supporting Pakistan’s military leadership. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar have shown patience during this period, Vaid noted a growing skepticism among ordinary Indians towards the U.S.
Looking ahead, Vaid suggested that if President Trump visits India next year, the U.S. must take positive steps to bridge the gap that has developed between the two countries. He described the meeting between Modi and Trump at the G-7 summit as a positive development, marking a new beginning for dialogue between the nations. However, he emphasized that meetings alone are insufficient; the U.S. must also demonstrate flexibility in trade and visa policies.
Vaid mentioned that India has successfully negotiated trade agreements with several countries, including the UAE, Japan, the UK, and Australia, but has yet to finalize a trade deal with the U.S. He believes that the U.S. should quickly reach an agreement on trade, considering India’s concerns.
Regarding visa policies, he noted that proposals related to the B-1 visa had created a perception of targeting Indian professionals. Fortunately, some of these provisions were struck down by U.S. courts, providing relief. Vaid stressed that Indian professionals are recognized globally for their skills and adherence to law, and should not be singled out.
Additionally, Vaid discussed the potential for energy cooperation with Venezuela. He suggested that given India’s refining capacity, a mutually beneficial model could be developed among the U.S., India, and Venezuela in the crude oil sector. He expressed hope that the relationship between the two democratic nations would strengthen in the future.
