Rajasthan Police Arrests Another Suspect in Digital Arrest Scam

Jaipur, September 16 (Daily Kiran) : Rajasthan Police have made a significant breakthrough in the notorious “digital arrest” scam, arresting another suspect linked to the case. The scam involved an elderly couple from Jaipur who were defrauded of ₹76 lakh by individuals posing as police and central investigative agency officials.

The latest suspect, identified as Tahir, resides in Gautam Buddh Nagar (Noida), Uttar Pradesh. With his arrest, the number of individuals apprehended in connection with this case has risen to three.

According to police reports, the suspects exploited the couple’s fear of arrest. They contacted the victims via WhatsApp, claiming to be officials from the police, Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), and the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The scammers falsely informed the couple that their Aadhaar cards had been linked to terrorist activities and significant financial crimes. They threatened that failure to cooperate with the investigation could result in their arrest and severe legal repercussions.

To bolster their credibility, the fraudsters allegedly sent a fake NIA notice through WhatsApp. They maintained constant communication through voice and video calls, applying psychological pressure on the couple.

Trusting the purported officials, the victims broke their fixed deposits and transferred ₹76 lakh into various bank accounts specified by the scammers.

The scheme unraveled when the couple finally reached out to the authorities, prompting an investigation. The cybercrime unit examined the WhatsApp numbers, suspicious mobile contacts, and the bank transactions involved.

Investigators discovered that the scam proceeds were funneled through multiple bank accounts. Notably, ₹21 lakh was deposited into an account belonging to a firm named “Haniya Fruits,” operated by an accomplice named Mujassim.

Further inquiries revealed that Mujassim had directed Tahir to arrange additional bank accounts for transferring the funds. Tahir contacted his acquaintance Satpal Singh, who provided information on other accounts.

Approximately ₹17 lakh was transferred through these accounts. Investigators also found that Satpal deducted his commission before handing over ₹7 lakh in cash to Tahir. Of this amount, ₹5 lakh was given to Mujassim, while Tahir retained ₹2 lakh.

The police are currently tracing the money trail and investigating the roles of other individuals and bank accounts involved in the fraud.

This arrest was made based on technical and financial evidence. The police team analyzed mobile numbers, WhatsApp chats, and banking transactions to establish connections among the suspects and trace the flow of funds. This investigation led them to Gautam Buddh Nagar, where Tahir was apprehended.

Rajasthan Police have urged the public to remain vigilant. They advise anyone approached by individuals claiming to be officials from the police, CBI, ED, NIA, or other government agencies, who threaten arrest, to stay calm and refrain from transferring any money. Victims are encouraged to contact the cyber helpline or their nearest police station immediately.
