Jalandhar, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : In Jalandhar, the dean of Lovely Professional University (LPU), Saurabh Lakhanpal, has spoken out regarding the recent protests and vandalism by students at the institution. He stated that the unrest was largely a reaction to rumors circulating on social media. As anxiety grew among students following a specific message, some individuals exploited the situation, escalating the protests into violence.
In an interview with a news agency, Lakhanpal described the instigators as possibly being antisocial elements or outsiders. He emphasized the need for identifying these individuals and taking appropriate legal action against them. He called for a thorough investigation by the police, civil administration, and university officials to ensure that those responsible face strict consequences.
Classes at LPU have been suspended for ten days, with many students returning home. Lakhanpal assured that classes would resume soon, and measures would be taken to prevent any disruption to students’ education.
The university is in constant communication with the cyber cell and police as they work to trace the origin of the viral message. They are analyzing tower dumps and other technical data, including the IP addresses used and the pathways through which the message spread.
As the message gained traction, students began to leave their hostels to discuss the situation. Lakhanpal recounted that he received a call around midnight and rushed to meet with students. During this time, some outsiders, wearing masks and armed with rods, attempted to force their way onto the campus and vandalized the main gate.
To ensure the safety of female students, the administration decided to send them back to their hostels. Within 10 to 15 minutes, university officials and students collaborated to control the situation, securing the area within hours.
Lakhanpal noted that students had requested to be involved in the investigation process. Consequently, a joint inquiry was established with police participation, allowing students to engage at every stage of the investigation starting the following day.
He stressed that adherence to standard operating procedures is vital for prompt action in such situations, while reiterating that the university’s top priority remains the safety of its students.
