Agartala, February 21: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha emphasized the need for the preservation of local languages alongside the promotion of Hindi. He stated that the primary purpose of language is to unite people, not divide them.

While addressing the Eastern, Northeastern, and Northern Regional Language Conference, inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the International Indoor Exhibition Center in Hapania, Saha urged that this conference should inspire collaboration through India’s official language while ensuring the advancement of regional languages.

Welcoming delegates from over 20 states to Tripura, the Chief Minister thanked Home Minister Shah for choosing the state as the venue and praised the officials for their efforts in organizing this significant event.

Saha highlighted that a common language fosters a stronger relationship between citizens and the government, noting that Hindi plays a crucial role in this regard. He stated, “India is a country of many languages. Hindi connects the people of the world’s largest democracy, but it should not overshadow local languages. Both must progress together. This diversity is our strength.”

He further remarked that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has entered a golden era of reviving and promoting Indian languages, including Sanskrit. He emphasized the importance of multilingual education as outlined in the National Education Policy 2020, which advocates for the use of the mother tongue as the medium of instruction.

Reflecting on his experiences in Tripura, Saha noted that the use and understanding of Hindi have increased, as has the use of local languages, which he described as integral to the identity and spirit of the people.

The event was attended by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, MP Rajiv Bhattacharya, Biplab Kumar Deb, and Kriti Singh Debbarma, along with Anshuli Arya, Secretary of the Official Language Department, and officials from Tripura Central University.

Over 3,000 delegates from the central government, public sector companies, and banks participated in the conference, representing Eastern, Northeastern, and Northern states and Union Territories.

In his address, Home Minister Shah stated that languages and their scripts should not become political issues or subjects of controversy. He urged parents to speak to their children in their mother tongue, warning that otherwise, future generations may lose touch with their literature, culture, and history.

He added that if children do not learn their mother tongue properly, they will struggle to understand their roots, traditions, and cultural heritage. Shah reiterated that the government stresses that primary education should be provided in students’ mother tongues and emphasized the use of ‘Nagari script’ for local languages to help preserve linguistic identity.
