President Murmu Emphasizes the Growing Importance of National Defense University Amid Changing Security Landscape

New Delhi, April 14: President Droupadi Murmu attended the convocation ceremony of the National Defense University in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, on Tuesday. In her address, she highlighted the increasing significance and responsibilities of institutions like the National Defense University in the evolving security landscape.

During her speech, the President noted that the security environment is becoming more complex. Just a few years ago, terms like digital arrests, cybercrime, and phishing attacks were unfamiliar to many. Today, these threats are prominent and pressing. In this context, the role and responsibility of institutions like the National Defense University have grown substantially.

She emphasized the need for law enforcement officials who are technically proficient and skilled in apprehending cyber fraudsters and bringing them to justice. There is also a demand for forensic experts who can effectively contribute to court investigations. Additionally, capable professionals who understand the nuances of geopolitics and can confidently articulate India’s perspective on the global stage are essential.

The President stated that strategic studies are no longer confined to theories of war and peace. They now encompass defense manufacturing, emerging technologies, supply chains, and self-reliant industrial capabilities. Establishing coordination with defense and security-related industries will be a crucial step toward achieving these goals.

President Murmu pointed out that information technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and cybersecurity play vital roles in shaping the world and its development. The government is making relentless efforts in this direction. Through initiatives like the ‘India AI Mission’ and the ‘AI Impact Summit 2026,’ India is taking a strong position in global AI governance. The broad international support for the ‘New Delhi Declaration’ at the AI Impact Summit 2026 is not only a technological achievement but also a testament to India’s leadership capabilities.

She remarked that cybersecurity is an integral part of internal security, financial stability, and digital trust. India has developed robust institutional mechanisms, such as the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, which are proving beneficial for citizens.

The President expressed that national power does not solely rely on the courage and valor of military personnel and security forces. It also depends on the quality, production, training, and technical self-reliance of the weapons and ammunition necessary for security. The government is continuously working in this direction, reducing reliance on imports by promoting indigenous capabilities and self-sufficiency in the defense sector.

President Murmu expressed confidence that the National Defense University will continue to progress toward becoming an excellent global center for security education. Graduates from this institution will contribute to building a safe, just, and self-reliant India. Through these efforts, India will emerge as a secure, empowered, and developed nation.
