
Sopore, April 15: The Sopore police continue their crackdown on individuals involved in recent student protests at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School. During overnight operations, five additional rioters were apprehended.
The unrest began when a student accused a teacher of sexual harassment. Following these allegations, students in Sopore organized a protest demanding strict action against the teacher. However, rioters infiltrated the peaceful demonstration, disrupting law and order and causing damage to public property. Sopore police are taking action against all those involved.
Authorities have identified 13 more rioters and are actively working to arrest them as soon as possible. Raids and search operations will persist until all individuals are brought to justice. The Sopore police reiterated their commitment to preventing anyone from exploiting sensitive situations to disturb public peace. Strict legal action will be taken against all involved in creating disorder, and no one will be spared.
The Sopore police have expressed appreciation for the ongoing support and cooperation from the local community in maintaining peace and order. They have urged all citizens to remain vigilant and assist law enforcement agencies. Earlier, on Tuesday, police arrested 25 rioters.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Iftikhar Talib, a case has been registered against the teacher following the student’s allegations, and an investigation has commenced. The Joint Director of Education has been appointed as the investigating officer and has been instructed to submit a report within 15 days.
Additionally, Sopore’s Deputy Commissioner S.A. Raina announced that academic activities at the Government Higher Secondary School, Boys Higher Secondary School, and Government Degree College Sopore will be suspended from April 15 to April 18. This precautionary measure aims to maintain law and order in light of the protests related to the harassment allegations.
