Rising Temperatures and Air Quality Concerns in NCR This Week

Noida, April 15: A severe heatwave is set to hit the National Capital Region (NCR) once again. According to the latest forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), clear skies are expected throughout the week, leading to a steady rise in temperatures.

Data indicates that from April 15 to April 20, maximum temperatures could rise from 36 degrees Celsius to as high as 39 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, minimum temperatures are expected to increase from 21 to 23 degrees Celsius. There are predictions that temperatures may approach 40 degrees in the coming days. The IMD forecasts a maximum of 36 degrees and a minimum of 21 degrees for April 15. On April 16 and 17, maximum temperatures could reach 37 degrees. By April 18, temperatures may rise to 38 degrees, and by April 19-20, they could reach 39 degrees.

With clear skies all week, the sun’s intensity will increase, making the heat feel even more oppressive. Not only is the heat a concern, but air pollution is also becoming a significant issue. According to air quality index (AQI) data, many areas in NCR have reported air quality ranging from poor to very poor. In Anand Vihar, Delhi, the AQI was recorded at 294, while Ali Pur reported 274, Bawana 236, and Mathura Road 230. Some areas, like Ashok Vihar and Chandni Chowk, recorded AQIs of 202 and 168, respectively, which fall into the ‘moderate to poor’ category.

The situation appears even more severe in Greater Noida and Ghaziabad. In Knowledge Park-3, Greater Noida, the AQI reached 221, while Knowledge Park-5 saw it spike to 334, categorizing it as ‘severe.’ In Ghaziabad’s Loni area, the AQI was recorded at 316, and Ved Vihar-Loni at 320. Additionally, Indirapuram recorded 238, Vasundhara 214, and Sanjay Nagar 181. Experts suggest that rising temperatures and stagnant weather (low wind) lead to the accumulation of pollutant particles in the atmosphere, increasing AQI levels. In such conditions, the elderly, children, and those with respiratory issues are advised to take special precautions.

Health experts recommend that people avoid going outside during the afternoon, stay hydrated, and wear masks. In the coming days, residents of NCR may face the dual challenges of heat and pollution.
