Political Tensions Rise Over Border Security in West Bengal

Kolkata, August 22: Political tensions are escalating in West Bengal regarding border security. State Minister Umesh Rai has claimed that 80% of the land required for fencing along the international border has been handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF) at the central government’s request. He accused the previous Mamata Banerjee government of hesitating to provide land, exacerbating the infiltration issue.

BJP National Vice President Dr. Madhuchandra Kar emphasized the importance of security, stating that Home Minister Amit Shah has focused on the critical issue of infiltration, which poses a significant threat to West Bengal.

Regarding the national anthem, she commented on Sharmila Tagore’s views, asserting that in a democratic country, everyone has the freedom to express their opinions. The government and others will determine the implications of such statements.

Minister Umesh Rai stated, “The international border in West Bengal was a threat to India. During meetings between the central and state governments, we were repeatedly asked to provide land for fencing. However, Mamata Banerjee consistently found excuses to delay. After the BJP came to power, we promptly allocated land to the BSF. We have given approximately 80% of the required land to secure our international border swiftly.”

Opposition leader in the state assembly, Ritabrata Banerjee, asserted that there can be no compromise on national security, given the extensive international border. He noted evidence that land was not provided to the BSF for fencing, which is crucial. He urged Home Minister Amit Shah to ensure that no illegal infiltrators enter the country.

Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra remarked, “India is a democratic nation, powerful from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. It is so vast that movements occur across 22-23 states on various issues. Rahul Gandhi leads another party and makes decisions accordingly, but the BJP is the sole authority.”

Trinamool Congress MLA Kunal Ghosh questioned whether industrialist Ashok Todi has an approved plan for the factory he proposed. He highlighted that previous applications were for a warehouse, and now the discussion is about a factory. If the factory is legitimate, it would be beneficial, but the key issue is whether the necessary documents are in place.
