Mumbai, August 21: The Maharashtra State Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food business license of the Bombay Presidency Radio Club Limited in South Mumbai’s Colaba area due to serious violations of food safety and hygiene regulations.
This action was taken under the guidance of Maharashtra’s Food Safety Commissioner, Tukaram Mundhe (IAS). During an inspection conducted on August 19, 2026, multiple severe violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2011 (Schedule-4) were identified at the establishment.
According to the FDA, there was a widespread infestation of flies in various parts of the kitchen. Additionally, a dead cockroach was found, and open cockroach traps were located near the dishwashing area, posing a risk of food contamination.
The inspection also revealed that the kitchen ceiling plaster was crumbling, with particles potentially falling directly into food preparation areas. Furthermore, detergent powder and other chemicals were stored alongside food items, increasing the risk of chemical contamination.
Serious hygiene deficiencies included placing utensils and food items directly on the floor, poor cleanliness of refrigerators used for meat products, improper defrosting procedures, and personal items like staff helmets and clothing being stored with food.
The FDA’s investigation found that kitchen doors were unsealed, and trash bins were placed near cooking stoves. There were also signs indicating spitting in the premises.
Overall, the establishment recorded a non-compliance rate of 47%, which is considered extremely serious in terms of food safety standards.
The FDA’s Zone-1 office exercised its authority under Section 32(3) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and Regulation 2.1.8(4) to immediately suspend the establishment’s license.
The order mandates that all activities related to the purchase, sale, and distribution of food items be halted during the suspension period.
The FDA has warned that any violation of the suspension order will result in strict legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act. Officials stated that this step was taken with the aim of safeguarding public health.
