India-Nepal Joint Meeting in Dehradun Focuses on Border Management and Security Cooperation

New Delhi, August 21: The 14th Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting between India and Nepal on border management took place in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, on August 20 and 21.

According to information shared by the Nepali Embassy in India, the delegation from Nepal was led by Anand Kafle, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Indian delegation was headed by Pousumi Basu, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

A press release from the Nepalese government stated that the meeting successfully reviewed the implementation of decisions made during the 13th JWG meeting held in Pokhara, Nepal, in March 2025.

The Ministry of Home Affairs emphasized the need for effective coordination and real-time information exchange between agencies of both countries to curb illegal activities, including cross-border crimes, drug trafficking, wildlife and human trafficking, counterfeiting, and arms smuggling. The Nepali side also raised concerns about new security challenges such as cybercrime and cross-border digital fraud.

Significant topics related to border management were discussed in detail during the meeting. These included preventing encroachment and unauthorized use in the Dashgaja area, full operation and utilization of integrated check posts, and mutual legal assistance.

The discussions also covered facilitating cross-border movement for citizens of both countries, enhancing the monitoring system, disaster management, and making the Nepal-India district-level coordination committee more effective.

Both parties agreed to enhance security surveillance in sensitive border areas using modern and advanced technology, including surveillance cameras. The next meeting of the working group will be scheduled at a mutually convenient date in Nepal.
