Kolkata, August 22: The Assam Rifles, under the Eastern Command’s Spear Corps, seized a significant quantity of narcotics in Manipur on Friday, leading to the arrest of six individuals.
According to sources, the operation was conducted with the assistance of the Manipur police and other agencies.
The Corps posted on X, stating, “Strengthening the fight against drugs, the Assam Rifles, in collaboration with state police, intercepted a boat laden with narcotics in Manipur’s Jiribam. Following a swift chase, six individuals were apprehended, and approximately 90,000 yaba tablets valued at ₹27 crore and 48 grams of heroin worth ₹28.80 lakh were recovered. This successful operation is a major blow to the drug trafficking network and reaffirms the security forces’ commitment to a safe and drug-free region.”
The spread of yaba has become a significant issue in the country. This drug, whose name translates to “crazy medicine” in Thai, is a mix of methamphetamine, a powerful and addictive stimulant, and caffeine.
An official stated, “These drugs enter through open borders and are used not only by addicts in the northeastern states but also spread throughout the country. Yaba tablets were seized in West Bengal from traffickers planning to send them across the border to Bangladesh.”
Indian security agencies have identified a specific connection between drug trafficking and terrorism. An official remarked, “Yaba, often referred to as a ‘party drug’ by youth, can be lethal. It can increase heart rate and blood pressure, damage small blood vessels in the brain, and lead to strokes. Overdose can cause hyperthermia, seizures, and even death. Users may exhibit violent behavior, paranoia, anxiety, confusion, and insomnia. This seizure marks a significant success for the government’s ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat’ initiative.”
