Pakistan Captain Fatima Sana Reflects on Disappointing Loss Against Australia

Leeds, June 24: In a disheartening match during the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, Pakistan faced a staggering defeat against Australia, losing by 113 runs. Team captain Fatima Sana acknowledged that her squad delivered their worst performance of the tournament at Headingley.

Pakistan’s journey in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has been quite disappointing. The team has played four matches so far, suffering defeats in each one. Ahead of their final group match against the Netherlands, Sana urged her team to honestly assess their shortcomings.

After the match, she stated, “I believe we played our worst cricket today, and as a team, we must accept this. We need to reflect, think, and improve ourselves.” Pakistan entered the World Cup with significant preparation, and Sana felt their pre-tournament training was solid. However, she emphasized that translating that preparation into on-field performance remains the team’s biggest challenge.

She added, “Personally, I think we practiced well before coming here, but we haven’t been able to implement our preparations on the field. We need to focus on this; otherwise, we had some very good practice sessions and preparation.” Despite the disappointing loss, Sana highlighted some positive aspects, particularly praising her young bowlers who applied pressure on Australia early in the match, preventing them from playing freely.

Left-arm spinner Nashra Sandhu and Sadia Iqbal both took two wickets and made a significant impact. They troubled Australian batters in the early overs, keeping the team in the contest. Sana remarked, “I think our bowling was very good, especially how we started. Nashra and Sadia bowled excellently, which was great. We just need more support from other players as we struggled in other areas. We have good players who can perform, but we need contributions from everyone.” Pakistan will face the Netherlands in their final tournament match on June 27.
