Colombia Secures Knockout Stage Spot with 1-0 Victory Over DR Congo in FIFA World Cup

Guadalajara, June 24: In a thrilling match at the FIFA World Cup 2026, Colombia triumphed over DR Congo with a narrow 1-0 victory. This win, secured at the Guadalajara Stadium, guarantees Colombia a place in the Round of 32 with one match still to play.

The only goal of the match came in the second half, courtesy of Daniel Munoz, who found the net with a deflected shot that pierced through DR Congo’s robust defense. Prior to that, DR Congo’s goalkeeper, Lionel Mpasi, made several remarkable saves, thwarting numerous attempts from Colombia, including shots from James Rodriguez, Luis Diaz, and Gustavo Puerta. Despite Colombia’s relentless pressure in the first half, neither team managed to score.

DR Congo also had opportunities to find the back of the net but failed to capitalize. A long-range effort from Edo Kayembe went wide, and Yoane Wissa’s header did not reach the goal. In the second half, Colombia ramped up their offensive efforts, aiming to break down DR Congo’s defense. Luis Diaz created a fantastic chance, but once again, Mpasi stood firm, denying the Colombian attackers.

At one point, it seemed the match might end in a draw due to DR Congo’s strong defense. However, in the 76th minute, Munoz finally broke the deadlock, giving Colombia a 1-0 lead. Notably, two of Luis Diaz’s goals were ruled offside, preventing Colombia from extending their advantage. Nevertheless, the team maintained their lead and denied DR Congo any scoring opportunities. With this victory, Colombia has secured two wins in the group stage, solidifying their position among the top two teams with a total of 6 points. Their next match is against Portugal on June 28.
