Opposition Questions Government on India-US Trade Deal Announcement

New Delhi, February 3: The opposition parties in India are criticizing the government following the announcement of a trade deal with the United States. They have raised concerns over U.S. President Donald Trump‘s declaration regarding the agreement and are demanding answers from the government.

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari questioned, “Has the capital of our country shifted from Delhi to Washington?” He added, “The announcement to halt ‘Operation Sindoor’ comes from Washington, and now the deal is also being declared from there. Where will India purchase oil from? This is also being decided in Washington.”

TMC MP Kirti Azad remarked that while President Trump expresses his desires openly, the Indian government remains silent. He noted that when Trump imposed a 100% tariff, no one spoke up. Even when it was reduced to 50%, there was no response. Trump rejected buying oil from Russia and suggested purchasing from Venezuela, yet the government remained quiet. He also mentioned Trump’s announcement of a ceasefire with Pakistan, which went unaddressed by the government. However, when the U.S. tariff was reduced to 18%, those in the government seemed pleased.

Congress MP Manish Tiwari stated, “President Trump claims that India’s tariff is now zero. But is it true that Indian exports to the U.S. will face an 18% tariff while U.S. exports to India will have zero tariff? These are critical issues that require clear answers.”

Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav also raised questions. She pointed out that while there is now an agreement on an 18% U.S. tariff, it was significantly lower before. This new tariff raises questions, especially since the Indian government has not made any announcement regarding it.

Dimple Yadav emphasized that the announcement came from the U.S. President. The way the U.S. is treating India indicates that the Indian government is not negotiating as it should.
