New Delhi, April 10: The Indian Army has approved the promotion of Colonel Shrikant Purohit to the rank of Brigadier. This decision marks a significant development in his career amidst a prolonged service dispute linked to the 2008 Malegaon blast case.
According to official sources, this decision was made following directives from the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT), which had previously stayed his retirement scheduled for March 31, pending a hearing on his promotion petition.
The tribunal’s intervention ensured that his service remained active until a resolution on his statutory complaint regarding promotion and service benefits was reached.
In its earlier order, the AFT had considered Colonel Purohit’s petition, in which he sought promotion to both Colonel and Brigadier ranks. He argued that his arrest in the Malegaon blast case and the subsequent lengthy legal proceedings adversely affected his career progression.
The background of the case reveals that Colonel Purohit was arrested in 2008 and remained in custody until 2017 when he was granted bail by the Supreme Court. He subsequently resumed his service in the Indian Army and continued to fulfill his duties. In July 2025, a special NIA court in Mumbai acquitted him in the Malegaon blast case.
Previously, the tribunal had issued notices to the Government of India and other respondents, questioning why the relief sought by the officer should not be granted. During the hearings, his lawyer argued that despite a long and unblemished service record, consideration for his promotion was overlooked due to circumstances related to the case.
In its findings, the AFT also stated that his retirement should be stayed until a final decision on his statutory complaint is made. While considering interim relief, the tribunal took into account both his acquittal and his service record after resuming duty.
Official sources have now confirmed that following these proceedings, the Army has granted approval for his promotion to the rank of Brigadier, subject to procedural formalities.
