Mumbai, August 14: Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam has held the opposition and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accountable for the alleged disruptions during the Parliament’s monsoon session. He claimed that the opposition’s protests hindered the effective functioning of the Lok Sabha. Nirupam asserted that this not only harmed the democratic process but also placed an economic burden on the government treasury.
In an interview, Nirupam emphasized that the inability to conduct Lok Sabha proceedings smoothly is a serious issue for democracy and the parliamentary system. He stated that the monsoon session was completely disrupted, with no productive days in the Lok Sabha. He specifically blamed the opposition and Rahul Gandhi, stating that the opposition’s role is to challenge the government, raise questions, and bring public issues to the House. However, creating continuous disruptions contradicts the essence of parliamentary democracy. He described this situation as a mockery of democracy and parliamentary governance.
Nirupam noted that the general public watches Parliament proceedings with hope. Citizens expect their elected representatives to address their concerns and draw the government’s attention to pressing issues. When parliamentary proceedings are obstructed, it results in economic losses for the government treasury. The public elects representatives to ensure their questions are robustly presented in the House. Thus, ongoing disruptions are unjust to the public’s expectations.
On the occasion of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, Nirupam reflected on the tragedy of the 1947 partition. He remarked that before independence, India faced horrific conditions due to partition. On August 15, 1947, the country gained freedom, but prior to that, it endured months of tragic events. Many people were forced to leave their homes. During partition, a significant number of Hindus migrated from Pakistan to India, while many Muslims left India for Pakistan. Widespread communal violence occurred, resulting in numerous casualties. The history of partition also includes instances of violence against women, a painful reminder of that era.
Nirupam stated that the nation should celebrate its independence with enthusiasm and pride, but it must also remember the tragedy of partition. Freedom fighters sacrificed their lives for the country’s independence, yet many lost their lives during the partition. Future generations should be informed about the pain and suffering of that time to learn from history. Remembering the partition tragedy is essential not to incite hatred against any community but to learn from the horrific events of the past and to avoid similar circumstances in the future.
Responding to Rahul Gandhi’s alleged comments about Georgia Meloni, Nirupam expressed strong disapproval. He questioned Gandhi’s political maturity, stating that as the leader of the opposition, he should understand what to say and the limits of his comments. While Gandhi has the right to criticize the government, personal remarks about Prime Minister Modi do not align with the dignity of the opposition leader’s position. Nirupam suggested that Gandhi has yet to grasp when and how to speak appropriately.
The Shiv Sena spokesperson reiterated that the opposition’s role is to critique government policies and raise questions. He accused Gandhi of making personal comments against Prime Minister Modi, which undermine the dignity of the opposition leader’s role. As the leader of the opposition, Gandhi’s statements carry significant political and international weight, necessitating greater caution in his words and remarks.
Nirupam also objected to the memes being circulated on social media regarding Georgia Meloni and Prime Minister Modi. He stated that such content not only disrespects India’s Prime Minister but also affects the dignity of a female Prime Minister from a country like Italy. While creating memes on social media is one thing, comments made by senior politicians in constitutional positions about foreign leaders should be taken seriously. Rahul Gandhi needs to be mindful of decorum and sensitivity in his statements.
