Indian Embassy in Japan Commemorates Partition Horrors Remembrance Day

Tokyo, August 14: The Indian Embassy in Japan observed Partition Horrors Remembrance Day on Friday, paying tribute to the brave souls who lost their lives during the partition. An exhibition was organized to express the memories and stories of those who experienced the partition, highlighting their unwavering courage in overcoming hardships.

India’s Ambassador to Japan, Nagama Malik, lit a ceremonial lamp and expressed condolences for those who endured suffering and lost their lives due to the 1947 partition.

The Indian Embassy shared on social media platform X, “On Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, we honored those who sacrificed their lives. Ambassador Malik lit a lamp and expressed sympathy for the hardships faced and lives lost due to the partition.”

Additionally, the embassy noted, “An exhibition was held to share the memories and stories of those who experienced the partition, showcasing their indomitable spirit in overcoming difficulties.”

Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is observed annually on August 14, marking the pain, displacement, and loss of life associated with the partition of India in 1947. This event led to one of the largest mass migrations in modern history, with millions crossing newly drawn borders amidst widespread communal violence and turmoil.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to those who suffered during the partition, recalling the courage of individuals who rebuilt their lives despite immense loss and displacement.

PM Modi stated, “Today, we celebrate Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. We remember the bravery of all those affected by the partition. This was a period in history that shattered many lives, uprooted families, and caused immense suffering.”

He further added, “In overcoming these challenges, people rebuilt their lives from scratch, transforming adversity into success and significantly contributing to the nation’s progress. Their life journeys remind us of the strength of human resilience.”

Meanwhile, India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar also reflected on the severe humanitarian challenges and geopolitical consequences of the partition. He wrote on X, “On Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, we recognize the immense human suffering and far-reaching geopolitical consequences of the partition. We salute those who restarted their lives, but we must also remember the painful lessons from this period in our history.”
