New Delhi, August 14: On the eve of Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu addressed the nation. In her speech, she honored the freedom fighters and highlighted the role of citizens in nation-building, the tragedy of partition, democracy, social justice, and the significant developments over the past decade.
The President stated, “On August 15, 1947, Mother India broke free from the shackles of oppression. All citizens became the architects of a free India.”
She acknowledged the dedicated students and teachers, the eager scientists and engineers, the healthcare workers, and the diligent farmers who contribute to nation-building. Countless citizens active in various fields and those fulfilling their constitutional duties are vital partners in this endeavor. The President expressed heartfelt appreciation for all.
President Murmu emphasized that India is progressing on the path of modern development while embracing its rich heritage and the ideals of the freedom struggle. The Vedic phrase “Vayam Rashtra Jagraya” inspires us to remain ever vigilant for the nation.
She noted that under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, countless citizens joined the freedom struggle. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar set high ideals for social reform and national loyalty. She respectfully acknowledged all the great sons of Mother India whose ideals led to the country’s independence and progress.
The President mentioned that today, August 14, is observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. Due to communal violence, millions were forced to become refugees and endure the horrors of partition. Yet, they did not lose their identity.
She remarked that when our country gained independence, it faced the extraordinary challenge of integrating over 550 princely states into the newly independent India. Sardar Patel merged these monarchies into our free democracy.
The President stated that the spirit of public participation has always existed among the residents of this land, and citizens are now advancing that spirit with renewed energy.
She noted that individuals from ordinary backgrounds are making extraordinary contributions across various fields. This reinforces the belief that in today’s India, everyone can dream big and achieve those dreams.
The President asserted that it is the duty of elected representatives to express public aspirations in the legislature. The executive must implement policies that serve the public and national interest. Everyone in the justice system must ensure that no individual is deprived of justice due to lack.
President Murmu highlighted that in the past decade, our country has achieved rapid inclusive development, prioritizing the coordination of heritage and progress while removing long-standing barriers to development.
She mentioned that our citizens are celebrating the 200th birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule. Mahatma Phule and Savitribai Phule made historic contributions to social justice, education, women’s empowerment, and equality. Following their ideals, the upliftment of marginalized communities has become a national priority in recent years.
The President announced that over 250 million people have been lifted out of poverty. Under the world’s largest financial inclusion scheme, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, nearly 590 million account holders have joined the banking system, including over 320 million women account holders. She assured that food security has been ensured for 800 million people through the provision of free rations.
