New Delhi: Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic has officially resigned from the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), the organisation he co-founded. Djokovic cited ongoing concerns regarding transparency and governance within the association as key reasons for his departure.
Djokovic and Canadian player Vasek Pospisil had established the PTPA as a non-profit entity aimed at providing players with a unified and independent voice to shape the future of professional tennis.
On the social media platform X, Djokovic wrote, “After much thought, I have decided to completely separate myself from the Professional Tennis Players Association. This decision comes following ongoing concerns about transparency, governance, and how my image has been portrayed.“
He added, “I remain proud of the vision that Vasek and I shared when founding the PTPA, which gave players a strong, independent voice – but it has become clear that my values and outlook no longer align with the current direction of the organisation.“
Djokovic further clarified that he will now focus on his tennis career, family, and contributing to the sport’s growth in ways that reflect his principles and integrity. He conveyed his best wishes to the players and others involved as they move forward, stating, “For me, this chapter has now closed.“
In March 2025, the PTPA along with several players had filed legal action against ATP, WTA, ITF, and ITIA, accusing them of antitrust violations. The lawsuits claimed that these governing bodies impose limits on prize money at major tournaments including Wimbledon, the US Open, the French Open, and the Australian Open, restricting players’ earnings. The allegations also highlighted how restrictive policies prevent players from fully capitalising on off-court income opportunities.
ATP and WTA have strongly denied these allegations, affirming their commitment to defending their decisions and policies.
