Jaipur, April 8: The Governor of Rajasthan, Haribhai Bagde, inaugurated the Indian Football League organized by Rajasthan United Football Club at the Vidyadhar Nagar Stadium on Wednesday. During the event, the Governor emphasized the significant role of sports in maintaining both physical and mental health.
Governor Bagde highlighted the importance of initiatives like ‘Khelo India’ in promoting a sports culture across the country. He extended his best wishes to the participating players, encouraging them to play with dedication and strive for excellence.
He noted that football is rapidly emerging as one of the most popular sports globally, with a history spanning over 2,000 years. The Governor explained that modern football began in the 19th century in England. He also mentioned that the ‘Fédération Internationale de Football Association’ (FIFA) was established in 1904 in Paris, France, with founding members including Belgium, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. Since gaining international recognition, football has evolved into a global sport. Women’s football was officially included as a competitive sport in the 1996 Atlanta Games.
Highlighting the growth of football in India, Bagde stated that the 1990s saw a surge in popularity for women’s football, particularly with early contributions from West Bengal.
Paying tribute to Nagendra Prasad, regarded as a pioneer of Indian football, the Governor acknowledged his crucial role in establishing football clubs in Kolkata and the Bengal region, which significantly boosted the sport’s popularity.
Encouraging youth to actively participate in sports, the Governor remarked that such involvement enhances both physical fitness and intellectual capacity. He reiterated that the Indian government is consistently promoting the development of sports through initiatives like ‘Khelo India.’
