Kolkata, September 28 (Daily Kiran) : Nitin Naveen, the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), visited Kolkata on September 28, 2026, where he indulged in the famous local snack, jhalmuri. What made the event memorable was that he prepared the dish himself.
In a 56-second video shared on the social media platform X, Naveen was seen making jhalmuri, despite the presence of others ready to assist him. He chose to go solo, showcasing his culinary endeavor.
Jhalmuri is a beloved street food in West Bengal, often enjoyed by Kolkatans as a snack at any time of day. The dish typically consists of puffed rice (muri), raw onions, green chilies, mustard oil, roasted peanuts, sev, various spices, and a splash of fresh lemon juice.
The popularity of jhalmuri has been highlighted in the past, notably when Prime Minister Narendra Modi tasted it during the West Bengal assembly elections. Following the BJP’s victory in the state, special stalls serving jhalmuri were set up in party offices, where leaders and workers celebrated their win by sharing the snack.
This trip marked Naveen’s first visit to Kolkata since taking on the role of BJP president. During his time there, he participated in several events. At the ‘Aangan Milan Seva’ program, he addressed the need for improved safety, respect, and dignity for women, which he argued had been neglected by previous governments. He praised Prime Minister Modi for empowering women through initiatives like the Panchayati Raj system and the upcoming Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, aimed at ensuring women’s rights in legislative bodies. Naveen emphasized that women play a crucial role in societal development, working alongside men to drive progress.
