New Delhi, September 28 (Daily Kiran) : Former Chief Election Commissioner SY Qureshi addressed the internal dynamics of the Election Commission, emphasizing the importance of regular communication and meetings to resolve disputes. Speaking to a news agency, he noted that during his tenure, the commission held meetings at least twice a week, even when there were no elections. During election periods, the frequency of these meetings increased, often taking place daily.
Qureshi acknowledged that disagreements among commission members were common, including during his time. However, he stressed that such issues were typically resolved through dialogue. When consensus could not be reached, decisions were made based on majority votes.
He explained that the Election Commission operates as a three-member body, where each member’s opinion is equally significant. Even if the Chief Election Commissioner holds a different view, the final decision reflects a collective agreement among all three members.
Referencing a recent press conference by the Election Commission, Qureshi questioned the implication that regular meetings and minutes were not previously part of the commission’s practices. He raised concerns about the operational transparency of the commission and called for clarity on steps being taken to rectify past shortcomings.
Qureshi underscored the necessity for transparency, consistent communication, and a collective decision-making process within constitutional bodies, highlighting the need for coordination and trust among members.
