Tokyo, September 28 (Daily Kiran) : In a vibrant display of its cultural heritage, Tamil Nadu participated in the Tourism Expo Japan 2026 held in Tokyo from September 24 to 27. The four-day event showcased the state’s ancient temples, Buddhist heritage sites, diverse landscapes, culinary delights, festivals, and innovative tourism experiences to Japanese industry professionals.
The Tamil Nadu pavilion was inaugurated by Nagma Mohd Mallick, India’s ambassador to Japan. Notable attendees included Dr. S. Swarna, Principal Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department, Suman Billa, Additional Secretary and Director General of the Ministry of Tourism, and Suchi Tyagi, Secretary of Tourism from Rajasthan.
During the ceremony, Dr. Swarna emphasized the shared Buddhist heritage between Japan and Tamil Nadu, inviting Japanese tourists to explore this rich legacy. She noted that Tamil Nadu is defined not only by its historic monuments but also by its ancient Sangam literature, which highlights five ecological regions: Kurinji (mountain), Mullai (forest), Marutham (agricultural), Neithal (coastal), and Palai (desert). This diversity offers unique experiences ranging from trekking in the hills to enjoying coastal life.
To strengthen ties with the Japanese tourism sector, Tamil Nadu is promoting sustainable tourism that aligns with environmental and cultural values through initiatives like JATA in Tokyo and a roadshow in Osaka.
Additionally, the state has launched registrations for the “Discover Tamil Nadu – International Edition 2026-27.” This special familiarization trip will take place from January 12 to 20, 2027, during the Pongal festival, inviting ten travel influencers, journalists, tour operators, and agents from around the world to showcase Tamil Nadu on a global stage.
At the Tokyo Expo, Tamil Nadu’s tourism department engaged in discussions with Japanese tour operators and investors to boost tourist arrivals from Japan. The state presented significant investment opportunities in heritage hotels, eco-tourism, adventure, and experiential tourism, further enhancing its global appeal.
Tamil Nadu has played a crucial role in the history of Buddhism in South India. Ancient port cities like Kanchipuram, Nagapattinam, and Poompuhar were once hubs of maritime and cultural exchange, where Buddhism spread to several Asian countries. The journey of the renowned Buddhist monk Bodhidharma from Kanchipuram to China remains a significant part of Eastern Asia’s Buddhist tradition.
Home to seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Tamil Nadu’s “Discover Tamil Nadu” familiarization trip is strategically scheduled during Pongal to provide participants with a firsthand experience of the festival.
