Former Trinamool MLA Arrested with Weapons in West Bengal

Former Trinamool Congress MLA Biswajit Das was arrested in Kolkata for illegal possession of firearms during a police search.

Kolkata, September 28 (Daily Kiran) : Kolkata police arrested former Trinamool Congress MLA Biswajit Das on Monday for illegal possession of firearms. The arrest occurred in the Bangaon assembly constituency at Gopalnagar Market Square, where police discovered weapons during a search of Das’s vehicle.

Authorities acted on a tip-off regarding Das’s possession of firearms. Upon searching his car and home, they confiscated a weapon, leading to his arrest on charges of illegal arms possession.

Das was taken to Gopalnagar police station but did not respond to questions from reporters during transport.

A prominent figure in Bangaon’s political scene, Das first gained attention in the final stages of the Left Front’s rule. He won the Bangaon North assembly seat in the 2011 elections on a Trinamool Congress ticket and was re-elected in 2016.

Known for his close ties to party leader Mamata Banerjee, Das held significant influence in the Trinamool’s organizational structure in Bangaon. However, following the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he switched allegiance to the BJP and won a seat in the Baghda constituency in the 2021 assembly elections.

Despite this, after a meeting with Banerjee, he became disillusioned and returned to the Trinamool Congress, later being appointed as the president of the Bangaon organizational district. In the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Das faced BJP candidate Shantanu Thakur but lost. He was again fielded in the recent assembly elections but was defeated by BJP’s Ashok Kirtania.
