Naval Chiefs of South Korea, US, and Japan Meet in Seoul to Enhance Maritime Security Cooperation

Seoul, April 15: The top naval commanders from South Korea, the United States, and Japan convened in Seoul on Wednesday. The primary goal of this meeting was to strengthen maritime security cooperation among the three nations.

Admiral Kim Kyung-ryul, Chief of Naval Operations of South Korea, Admiral Stephen Koehler, Commander of the US Pacific Fleet, and Admiral Akira Saito, Chief of Staff of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, participated in the discussions. They engaged in various bilateral meetings, including a joint dinner meeting.

According to a report by Yonhap News Agency, this dialogue occurs amid rising tensions in the Middle East. Speculation is growing about whether the discussions might address the issue of the US blockade on Iranian ports.

Previously, President Donald Trump urged South Korea, Japan, and other nations to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz to ensure the safety of vessels passing through the area.

Earlier in the day, Admiral Kim and Admiral Koehler discussed the robust joint defense framework between South Korea and the US. They also talked about enhancing cooperation in naval maintenance, repair, and operations.

Furthermore, discussions between Admiral Kim and Admiral Saito focused on increasing personnel exchanges and resuming joint maritime search and rescue exercises. In January, South Korea’s Defense Minister An Kyung-bae and his Japanese counterpart Shinjiro Koizumi agreed to restart joint maritime search and rescue drills for the first time in nearly nine years.

The three naval chiefs were also expected to attend a dinner meeting later in the evening. It is anticipated that they will discuss measures to counter and prevent the growing nuclear and missile threats from North Korea.

Overall, this meeting is viewed as a significant step towards strengthening defense and maritime security cooperation among the three countries.
