Washington, April 15: In a bold statement, U.S. President Donald Trump has declared his intention to permanently open the Strait of Hormuz, a move aimed at crippling Iran’s economy through its blockade. He suggested that China would be pleased with this development.
On Truth Social, Trump emphasized his friendship with Chinese President Xi Jinping, highlighting the importance of not supplying weapons to Iran and advocating for smarter alternatives to conflict.
Indicating collaboration with China, Trump stated, “China is very happy that I am opening the Hormuz Strait forever. I am doing this for them—and for the world. Such a situation will never arise again.”
He further mentioned that Iran has agreed not to send weapons, noting that when he visits in a few weeks, President Xi will embrace him warmly. “We are working together smartly and very effectively!”
In his familiar style, Trump posed the question of whether this approach is not better than war, while also asserting, “But remember, if we have to fight, we are very good at fighting—better than anyone else!”
On the same day, Trump appeared on Fox News, claiming that Xi had informed him that China is not supplying weapons to Iran. He mentioned that he had previously written to Xi expressing his concerns after hearing reports of such actions.
On Tuesday, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry outright rejected Trump’s claims regarding China’s arms supply to Iran amid the blockade. They warned that if the U.S. raises tariffs based on these allegations, China will respond accordingly.
