Chandigarh, April 15: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab has condemned the recent changes made by the BJP-led central government regarding the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). The party argues that this decision is an attempt to control river water and undermine the state’s rights over its resources.
AAP spokesperson Baltej Pannu stated, “Punjab has always faced injustice but has responded with resilience. However, in the past, some state leaders have weakened its position.”
He continued, “The story of injustice against Punjab is long, yet the people have consistently fought back with double the strength. Unfortunately, some leaders have harmed the state’s interests.”
Pannu further criticized the central government’s decision to accept applications for key positions in the BBMB from across the country. He claimed this move contradicts the spirit of the Punjab Reorganization Act of 1966 and the arrangements made at the time of BBMB’s formation.
He emphasized, “The Punjab Reorganization Act of 1966 and the establishment of BBMB in 1976 stipulated that these key positions would remain reserved for Punjab. Now, the central government wants to appoint its officials to these positions to exert control.”
Linking this development to the exploitation of the state’s water resources, Pannu noted that Haryana had used its entire share of water last year and subsequently requested additional supplies.
He remarked, “Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has made it clear that if Haryana has not utilized its share of water properly, it is their mistake, not Punjab’s. This year, Punjab has advised Haryana multiple times to use water wisely.”
Pannu also alleged that there is an attempt to replace current officials with those close to the central government to influence decisions related to Punjab’s water. He pointed out that Punjab has already suffered from excessive groundwater extraction.
He concluded, “Punjab has already faced significant losses. The rapid decline in groundwater levels due to paddy cultivation and the use of pesticides have led to serious health issues, including cancer.”
