Survivors of Iranian Ship Sunk in US Attack Return to Iran from Sri Lanka

Colombo, April 15: Survivors from the Iranian naval vessel “IRIS Deena,” which sank in a US attack earlier in March, have returned to Iran from Sri Lanka. This information was confirmed by a senior military official in Sri Lanka.

According to the Xinhua news agency, Sri Lanka’s Deputy Defense Minister Aruna Jayasekara stated that the 32 survivors were sent back aboard another Iranian ship, “IRIS Bushehr,” along with over 200 others. They departed Sri Lanka on a special flight on Tuesday.

The “IRIS Deena” was attacked by a US submarine in a maritime area near Sri Lanka. Following the incident, the Sri Lankan Navy conducted a rescue operation, recovering 87 bodies and saving 32 individuals alive.

The “IRIS Bushehr” had requested permission to enter Sri Lankan waters in early March. On March 6, the Sri Lankan Navy disembarked the crew at Colombo Port, where they remained under Sri Lankan supervision.

Meanwhile, another Iranian vessel, “IRIS Lavan,” was granted permission to dock in Kochi, Kerala, due to technical issues. This decision came amid international concern following the sinking of another Iranian warship by a US torpedo.

The “IRIS Lavan” arrived in Kochi on March 4 after the Indian government approved Iran’s emergency request. The ship experienced technical difficulties on February 28, prompting Iran to seek assistance from India.

This vessel was in the region to participate in the International Fleet Review. The Indian government allowed it to enter Kochi Port on March 1.

On March 9, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar informed the Rajya Sabha that Iran expressed gratitude for India’s decision to allow the “IRIS Lavan” to dock in Kochi. He stated, “Iran requested permission for three ships to enter our port on February 20, 2026. We granted approval on March 1. The ‘IRIS Lavan’ arrived in Kochi on March 4, and its crew is currently under the care of the Indian Navy. We believe we have taken a humane and correct step. Iran’s Foreign Minister has thanked us for this.”
