New Delhi: The southwest monsoon is now advancing rapidly across India, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a heavy rain alert for 16 states. After entering parts of Bihar, the monsoon is expected to become active in Uttar Pradesh and neighboring regions within the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, over 20 states, including much of South India, are already witnessing intense rainfall.
The rains are bringing much-needed relief from the heat as temperatures drop across the country. However, the adverse weather has also led to strong winds in coastal regions such as Andhra Pradesh and tragic incidents, with at least 16 fatalities reported due to rain-related accidents.
Here’s a complete update on the latest IMD monsoon alert and what to expect in your region.
Heavy Rain Warning Issued in Multiple Regions
According to the IMD, the following regions are on alert for heavy rainfall:
Southern States: Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka
Eastern & Northeastern States: West Bengal (Gangetic plains), Assam, Odisha, Sikkim, Manipur, Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh
Central & Western States: Jharkhand, East and West Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Saurashtra & Kutch (Gujarat), Konkan-Goa, Central Maharashtra
Northern States: Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh
The IMD has urged residents in these areas to exercise caution, especially in low-lying or flood-prone zones.
Flight Cancellations & Fatalities Reported
Severe weather conditions have already impacted transportation:
Ranchi Airport (Jharkhand): Four flights were cancelled due to poor weather — including three operated by IndiGo and one by Air India Express — causing inconvenience for passengers.
Gujarat: Heavy rains and storms have resulted in 12 deaths, with an additional four fatalities reported in other parts of the country.
Monsoon to Intensify Nationwide
The monsoon is expected to become active across almost the entire country in the coming days, ushering in a period of torrential rainfall. IMD officials forecast continued wet conditions, particularly in coastal and central India.
Conclusion
With the southwest monsoon gaining momentum, citizens are advised to stay updated with local weather reports and follow safety precautions. As the season progresses, authorities are on high alert to manage flood risks and transport disruptions.
