Chennai, April 6: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in the hilly regions of Virudhunagar, Theni, and Dindigul districts on Monday. In contrast, much of northern Tamil Nadu is expected to remain dry. Early this morning, heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning occurred in Ulundurpet and surrounding areas of Kallakurichi district, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas.
According to the official statement, light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is likely in some areas of southern Tamil Nadu and the Western Ghats. This warning specifically targets the high-altitude regions of Virudhunagar, Theni, and Dindigul, where heavy rainfall is expected at one or two locations during the day. Conversely, northern Tamil Nadu, including Chennai and the Union Territory of Puducherry, is likely to experience predominantly dry weather. The Climate Change Department has indicated that rain is not expected in these areas throughout the day.
The weather department has also forecast a gradual increase in maximum temperatures in some parts of northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Daytime temperatures in these regions are expected to rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the next 24 hours. However, no significant change in maximum temperatures is anticipated in southern Tamil Nadu, where the weather is expected to remain relatively stable.
In Chennai, the sky is likely to be partially cloudy throughout the day. The maximum temperature is expected to range between 37 and 38 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may hover around 27 to 28 degrees Celsius.
Given the current weather conditions, residents of the city can expect a hot and humid day. Despite the rainfall forecast in the southern districts, the IMD has not issued any special warnings for fishermen along the Tamil Nadu coast, indicating that fishing activities at sea are relatively safe.
Authorities have advised residents in hilly areas to remain vigilant, especially in regions prone to waterlogging or sudden weather changes. Travelers heading to the Western Ghats are also encouraged to stay informed about local weather advisories. The IMD is closely monitoring the changing weather patterns and will continue to issue updates as necessary.
