New Delhi – Torrential monsoon rains have wreaked havoc across parts of Himachal Pradesh, with the Mandi district bearing the brunt of a devastating cloudburst that has left four people dead and 16 still missing. The state is reeling from continuous downpours, and the estimated damage has crossed ₹800 crore, according to initial government assessments.
Cloudburst Triggers Widespread Destruction
The most severe damage has been reported from Karsog and Dharampur in Mandi, where a cloudburst swept away roads, bridges, culverts, and homes. The situation continues to be critical, with many villages cut off due to landslides and washed-out routes.
As of 1 PM, 18 houses were either fully or partially damaged, and 12 cowsheds and 30 livestock animals were lost in the floodwaters. In the Gohar area alone, four cloudbursts occurred in quick succession, damaging homes and infrastructure.
Rescue Operations in Full Swing
Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed across affected areas. So far, 115 people have been successfully rescued, but 16 individuals remain unaccounted for, raising concerns that the death toll could rise further as search efforts continue.
The rain continues relentlessly, making rescue operations difficult and increasing the threat of further landslides and flash floods.
37% Excess Rainfall in June
Himachal Pradesh has recorded 37% more rainfall than average in June, according to the Meteorological Department. The excess precipitation has caused major rivers and streams to swell, with water levels breaching danger marks in several locations.
In the Mandi district:
Pandoh recorded 123 mm
Mandi city received 120 mm
Shimla saw 110 mm
Palampur recorded 80 mm
Other severely affected districts include Kangra, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, Solan, and Shimla.
Heavy Rain Alert for July 2–3
The IMD has issued a heavy rain alert for multiple districts, including Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Mandi, Chamba, and Kangra, for July 2 and 3. Residents in these regions are advised to remain indoors, avoid travel unless necessary, and stay updated with weather advisories.
Government Response and Precautions
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely. Relief teams have been instructed to remain on high alert, and district administrations are working to evacuate vulnerable areas and restore connectivity.
The Himachal Pradesh government has urged residents in high-risk zones to move to safer areas and avoid water bodies, unstable slopes, and forested regions during the heavy rain spell.
