Kolkata, August 28: Ritabrata Banerjee, the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, has accused former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of dismantling student politics. He has also called for the current government, led by Suvendu Adhikari, to conduct student union elections.
Ritabrata Banerjee pointed out that Mamata Banerjee was once a leader of a student union herself, yet she halted student union elections upon coming to power. He drew a parallel between her actions and those of historical figures like Hitler and Mussolini, who similarly suppressed student union elections when they gained authority.
He stated, “Mamata Banerjee was once a student union leader, but after assuming power, she stopped the elections. This is an unforgivable crime and goes against democracy. Hitler and Mussolini were among those who first halted student union elections after coming to power.”
He further questioned, “Why has there been no announcement regarding the student union elections? We want answers from the Chief Minister (Suvendu Adhikari). The BJP must respond to this. As for Mamata Banerjee, she has committed an unforgivable act by eradicating student movements and student politics.”
Ritabrata Banerjee elaborated, “A man who passed the 10th grade at the age of 85 and spent three years in jail is also a student leader. I have been involved in student movements from 1996 to 2016, working from the grassroots level. Upon returning to Kolkata, I see the same person still claiming to be a student leader at the age of 67. Congratulations to Mamata Banerjee. For 15 years, her aunt’s government ruled Bengal, and the charter mafia believed the entire state belonged to them. This old habit of the charter mafia nexus has not faded.”
