Major Book Piracy Racket Busted in New Delhi; One Arrested

New Delhi, March 26: The Crime Branch of Delhi Police’s Inter-State Cell (ISC) has successfully dismantled a significant book piracy racket, leading to the arrest of 67-year-old Jwala Prasad. He is accused of illegally printing and selling pirated books belonging to Penguin Random House India Private Limited.

This operation uncovered a vast network involved in the unauthorized printing, storage, and distribution of copyrighted books. Penguin Random House India Private Limited is a major publishing house that holds intellectual property rights over the seized materials.

Reports indicate that the accused was a key player in this racket, facilitating the creation and circulation of counterfeit copies in violation of copyright laws.

The police received a complaint on March 14 and conducted a raid in Sector 16, Rohini, Delhi. During this operation, they seized a total of 8,593 pirated books. All these books have been confiscated. In a subsequent raid at a nearby location, an additional 11,544 pirated books were recovered, bringing the total number of seized books to over 20,137.

Initially, the accused misled the investigation by providing false information about the source of the printing. However, through persistent questioning and police custody, the investigation team achieved a significant breakthrough. Following the revelations, they discovered a printing setup used for illegal reproduction.

Police recovered two printing machines, four negatives of pirated books, and twelve printing plates used to reproduce copyrighted material from a press located in the Anand Parvat Industrial Area. These findings confirmed the accused’s direct involvement in the piracy operation, which included the illegal printing and distribution of pirated books.

The accused has been arrested, and further investigations are underway to identify other individuals involved in the piracy network.
