Landslide in Dhanbad Destroys Homes, Residents Protest for Rescue Efforts

Dhanbad, April 1: A landslide in the Katras area of Dhanbad district, Jharkhand, caused panic on Tuesday evening. Around 5 PM, the ground suddenly collapsed in the Tandabari locality, burying three homes and trapping three to four individuals beneath the debris.

Even four hours after the incident, rescue operations had not commenced for those trapped. The area was engulfed in fear and chaos, prompting local residents to flee their homes for safety. Angered villagers surrounded the Sonardih police station in large numbers and blocked the NH-32 Katras-Mahuda main road in protest.

Rinki Kumari, a victim of the landslide, reported that her home was swallowed by the sudden collapse. She stated that her sister Geeta Kumari, aunt Sarita Devi, and father Monu Oraon are trapped under the rubble. Additionally, one or two other individuals may also be buried. Family members have alleged that illegal mining activities led to this disaster.

Upon receiving news of the incident, local MLA Shatrughan Mahato arrived at the scene to assess the situation. He noted that such incidents have been occurring frequently in Katras and surrounding areas. Landslides have become common in Sonardih, Ramkanali, Tetulmari, Jogta, Tetulia, and the Baghmara region.

Mahato blamed illegal mining for the disaster and demanded immediate relief and rescue operations from the administration. He mentioned that he has contacted the Dhanbad Deputy Commissioner, BCCL management, and other officials to request a rescue team be dispatched.

Dhanbad MP Dhullu Mahato also expressed concern over the incident via telephone. The atmosphere in the area remains tense, with dozens of families fleeing to safer locations with their essential belongings and livestock. Local residents claim that living in the area has become dangerous. As of the time of writing, no rescue operations had begun.
