Two Arrested for Gang Rape of Woman in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar, March 30: The Commissionerate Police arrested two individuals on Monday for allegedly gang-raping a woman in the Tamando area of the city on the night of March 27-28.

The accused have been identified as Narayan Swain (31) and Vichitra Sahu (34), both of whom reportedly work as private ambulance drivers in Bhubaneswar.

According to police sources, the victim, a resident of West Bengal, lived in a rented house in the Chandaka area with her husband, who is a mason. She was acquainted with the main accused, Swain, due to his frequent visits to a relative’s house near the couple’s residence. Swain allegedly exploited this familiarity to gain the victim’s trust.

Sources revealed that after having an argument with her husband on Friday night, the victim decided to return home to West Bengal. During this time, Swain encountered her and offered to give her a ride to Bhubaneswar Railway Station. However, instead of taking her to the station, he allegedly took her to his rented accommodation in the Ranasinhpur area under the Tamando police jurisdiction, where he lived with his roommate, who is also a co-accused in this case. Both men are accused of sexually assaulting the victim.

After the incident, they reportedly threatened the victim, warning her not to disclose what had happened. They attempted to silence her through intimidation and fear. However, after managing to escape, the woman filed a complaint at the Tamando police station, leading to the registration of a case (102/26) on March 29.

Following the complaint, police acted swiftly and arrested both suspects. They were presented in court, where they were remanded to judicial custody.
