Assam Chief Minister Warns Congress Against Exploiting Zubeen Gargs Legacy

Guwahati, April 1: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a sharp attack on the Congress party, accusing it of engaging in unacceptable politics regarding the late popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.

Speaking to reporters during an election campaign, Sarma questioned the intentions of Congress leaders who visit the ‘Zubeen area’ with cameras in tow. He emphasized that Zubeen Garg had clearly stated his desire to stay away from politics, yet Congress has dragged his name into its manifesto, which he deemed an unforgivable mistake.

Sarma also targeted Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, accusing him of mispronouncing the singer’s name as ‘Zubeen Marg,’ which the Chief Minister found disrespectful. He asserted that the people of Assam would teach Congress a lesson for politicizing a cultural icon.

The Chief Minister claimed that a decision related to Zubeen Garg could be announced within a month, although he did not provide further details. He reiterated that if the Bharatiya Janata Party is re-elected in Assam, it will take action against politics driven by exclusionary mindsets.

Referring to the visits of political leaders, Sarma questioned why those going to the Zubeen area do not visit the memorial of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika, raising concerns about their selective approach.

The Zubeen area is a memorial dedicated to the late Zubeen Garg, located at the site of his cremation. It has become an emotional space for fans and admirers, symbolizing the singer’s cultural impact and deep connection with the people of Assam. Over time, it has evolved into a gathering place for supporters to pay tribute and celebrate his legacy.

Sarma stated that he would visit this site only after taking the oath as Assam’s Chief Minister again and reiterated that he would not spare anyone attempting to politicize Zubeen Garg’s name.
