Kolkata, August 6: Following the directives of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, ‘view-blockers’ have been removed from a popular public park in central Kolkata starting Thursday. This is the same park where former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee used to take her morning walks.
In a message posted on social media, Chief Minister Adhikari shared before-and-after photos of Elliot Park. The images contrast the park’s previous obstructed views, surrounded by tin fencing, with its current unobstructed beauty.
While the Chief Minister did not mention the former CM by name, he criticized the previous administration’s decision. He stated, “The natural beauty, greenery, and stunning views of Elliot Park were hidden from the public eye due to a tall tin fence along Chaurangi Road. This was done so that a dignitary from the previous government could walk there without being seen by the public.”
Adhikari expressed gratitude to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) for facilitating the removal of the tin fence, stating that the park’s beauty is now accessible to the general public once again. He emphasized, “Public property should remain open for the people.”
The decision to erect the high tin fence around Elliot Park had faced strong criticism from morning walkers, the general public, and civil society members at the time. They argued that the fence completely marred the park’s open and beautiful view, depriving people of the chance to enjoy its greenery. The removal of these barriers has been welcomed by the public, especially those who frequent the park for morning walks.
