Kolkata, August 6: Two young men were arrested on Thursday in the Gazole area of Malda district, West Bengal. They were found in possession of ₹4.1 million in unaccounted cash and 568 grams of brown sugar.
A police officer from the district reported that the suspects were apprehended early Thursday morning on National Highway-12. Authorities received a tip-off that the duo was transporting a significant amount of cash and drugs from Malda to Gazole. Following this information, a police team stopped the suspicious bikers on the highway. Upon thorough inspection, the cash and drugs were discovered.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Kishore Mandal and Siddharth Mandal. They were allegedly transporting the cash and drugs from Gazole to Malda city. The motorcycles they were riding have also been seized.
Police suspect that both men are part of an organized drug trafficking ring. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities questioning them to uncover information about other gang members.
In recent days, several incidents of unaccounted cash being seized across various regions of West Bengal have come to light. Police reported that on Wednesday, a trolley filled with cash exceeding ₹4.8 million was recovered from a defunct brick kiln in Durgapur, Purba Bardhaman district.
Earlier, police in Birbhum district discovered ₹2.8 billion in cash and 15 kilograms of gold at the residence of a man named Minar Mandal. The estimated market value of the gold is around ₹2.2 billion. Minar is reportedly a close relative of Tulu Mandal, a prominent stone quarry owner in the district who is currently on the run.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also initiated proceedings to investigate Tulu Mandal under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
