New York, September 22 (Daily Kiran) : In a significant address in New York, Siby George, Secretary (West) of India’s Ministry of External Affairs, highlighted the pressing need for comprehensive reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). This statement came during an event associated with the “France-Mexico Initiative,” organized by the foreign ministers of France and Mexico.
The Ministry of External Affairs shared on social media platform X that Secretary George reiterated India’s long-standing stance on the issue of veto power and stressed the urgency of reforming the UNSC. He emphasized that such changes are essential to better reflect the realities of today’s world.
Earlier, on September 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres underscored the importance of a multipolar world. They agreed that reforms in the UNSC and other multilateral institutions are necessary to accurately represent the current global landscape.
During a meeting at the BRICS summit in New Delhi, Modi and Guterres discussed various pressing issues, including ongoing global conflicts, freedom of navigation on maritime routes, sustainable development, human-centered AI, advancements in renewable energy, and global food security.
Following their meeting, Prime Minister Modi expressed on X that it was a productive discussion with Guterres, covering topics such as India’s progress during its BRICS presidency, the commitment to strengthening multilateral systems, and the urgent need for reforms in the UN.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Guterres congratulated India and Prime Minister Modi on India’s fourth presidency of BRICS. The statement from the MEA noted that both leaders emphasized the significance of a multipolar system and the need for reforms in the UNSC and other multilateral institutions to better reflect today’s realities.
The details released by the UN Secretary-General’s office indicated Guterres’ appreciation for India’s close cooperation with the UN. The two leaders also discussed the priorities of India’s BRICS presidency, including the need for multilateral institutions that can clearly represent the realities of the 21st century.
