Shrirampur, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : The Kolkata High Court has conditionally approved a political meeting led by former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, scheduled for Friday in Shrirampur, Hooghly district. This decision came after the Trinamool Congress sought legal intervention when police denied permission for both a public meeting and a subsequent rally.
During the hearing before Justice Sougata Bhattacharya, the court granted permission for the meeting but rejected the request for a rally. The police argued that allowing the rally could lead to significant traffic congestion on the busy Grand Trunk Road.
Justice Bhattacharya imposed several restrictions on the meeting. It is set to take place between 1 PM and 3 PM, and the number of attendees is capped at 2,000. Additionally, the court mandated that no inflammatory remarks should be made that could hurt religious sentiments. The state administration has been instructed to deploy adequate police forces to ensure the event proceeds smoothly.
Furthermore, the court ordered that a list of volunteers, including their contact numbers, must be submitted to the police by 8 PM on Thursday.
This meeting marks Mamata Banerjee’s first political engagement outside Kolkata since the assembly elections, where her party faced a defeat.
